O2 Telefónica has activated its mobile network for the next-generation vehicle emergency call service, “Next-Generation Emergency Call” (NG eCall), now available nationwide in Germany alongside the existing eCall service. NG eCall uses 4G/LTE today and will use 5G in the future, making emergency calls from cars and commercial vehicles more robust and future-proof when connecting to rescue coordination centres.
O2 Telefónica tested the NG-eCall components within the framework of industry-wide interoperability tests: the company’s technicians participated in the so-called ETSI Plugtest to comprehensively verify the interaction of connections, including connectivity to other networks.
O2 Telefónica also works with Transatel, an internationally established provider of connectivity solutions that uses the O2 network in Germany for its services. Transatel connects millions of vehicles and devices worldwide through (e)SIM-based mobile solutions and is active in automotive ecosystems. The partnership between O2 Telefónica and Transatel strengthens the ability to support automotive customers in securely connecting their vehicles – a key factor when new standards such as NG eCall are implemented in industrial practice.
